Related activity needs its own missingness explanation
The related inpatient activity view lists constituent MS-DRGs, including unpublished rows. A publication range is appropriate only where the source-specific suppression rule and mapping support it; it is not a confidence interval or a bound on the HRRP patient cohort. An unpublished service is not evidence that the hospital did not provide it. Preserve the reason and source period when carrying the information into a brief.
A missing HRRP value silently rendered as zero can reverse the meaning of a comparison. The interface may look complete while directing attention using evidence that was never reported.
A polished interface can create false certainty faster than a spreadsheet. Empty values disappear, unavailable measures are interpreted as zero and a calculated scenario begins to look like a reported fact. In healthcare public intelligence, visual clarity must include clarity about absence.
The public review distinguishes source-reported values, calculated comparisons and unavailable information. A historical financial estimate uses inputs from different periods and is not the hospital’s actual CMS reduction or an amount that could be recovered. That explanation belongs beside the estimate, not only in a footer.
Missing is a governed state
Missingness can mean several things. A facility may be outside a program population. A measure may not be reportable, or a source field may be absent. A relationship may be unverified, or local execution evidence may never have been supplied. Treating all of these states as zero destroys meaning.
A useful interface therefore answers four questions:
- What is present and source-reported?
- What was calculated by Lime Health?
- What is researched or inferred?
- What is unavailable or still an open hypothesis?
Source notes should identify the dataset, reporting period, population and reason for absence where known. A missing comparison or an unpublished activity row should stay visibly unavailable. The current facility brief carries those limits into the discussion copy; a polished presentation must not imply a complete patient population.
Rankings require a second boundary
Research priority can order attention. It cannot establish outreach readiness, operational failure or a financial recovery promise. Likewise, a payment scenario may help frame materiality while remaining different from an actual CMS payment amount for a different period.
The visual product should resist the temptation to hide this qualification in a footer. The label belongs next to the number because that is where interpretation happens.
Better absence leads to better discovery
Visible gaps identify the next legitimate question. If a facility has public pressure but no local owner, workflow or handoff evidence, the responsible next step is discovery. That gap does not justify a diagnosis. If an affiliation is uncertain, the next step is a sourced correction. The uncertainty should remain visible rather than being silently normalized.
The interface is trustworthy when it shows the boundary of the evidence with the same care it shows the evidence itself.
